Quill

The pen is mightier

than the pencil

its graphite smudges

impermanent

erasable.

The quill is mightier

than the pen

its inky blotches

sometimes indecipherable

crossed out

yet still there

even when the ink dries out

or the pen cracks

The quill writes into the paper

carves its words into parchment

and when it grows dull,

it can be refashioned

retooled

resharpened.

And yet – only until

it has run itself out.

Ultimately,

the voice is mightier than the quill.

Its words can motivate the laziest of us

can move us to action

rebellion

tears

makes us see our hearts.

The sword can intimidate,

but its real power lies in destruction.

Write like a quill,

seek their words’ permanence,

but give those words voice.
